A lot of work goes into bulk liquid transport. Moving the cargo from its point of origin to the destination also involves a lot of different parties. There are three categories of bulk liquid transport companies these include, shippers, for-hire carriers and specialized freight brokers. In this article, we will look at these three types of transportation services and the different roles they play in moving your cargo safely.
This party is the owner of the cargo being transported. They dictate the parameters and indicate the type of load that the carrier will be moving during the bulk liquid transport. The following are their roles.
Specifying the load and providing compatible equipment
Because the shipper is the one who initiates the bulk liquid transport it is their responsibility to adequately specify the cargo or product up to and including the type of equipment they want to be used to transport their cargo. There are four types of bulk liquid transportation equipment.
The ISO Container
This is a standard stainless steel tanker that is typically used for transporting petroleum products and dairy products, it can also be used for transporting juices and other edible fruits. It is ideal for transporting both hazardous and non-hazardous materials and the tank itself can be used on road, by rail or ship. Tanks that transport edible liquids have a special lining that prevents the liquid from coming into contact with the stainless steel container.
This is a container whose walls are made of PVC and the walls are collapsible. Its design was intended to leverage already existing shipping containers by placing the empty flexitank into a shipping container and placing some protective materials between the walls of the flexitank and the steel walls to prevent rapture during bulk liquid transport. They are intended for one-way transport of non-hazardous liquid material.
Drums and barrels
These are also another popular means of bulk liquid transport they range in capacity from 20 liters to around 250 liters. They can be constructed out of PVC or stainless steel. They are popular for transporting lubricants and other industrial chemicals.
Intermediate Bulk Container
They borrow their name from the fact that their capacity is between the size of drums and barrels and ISO containers. Their walls are made from PVC surrounded by a frame that is made of either aluminum or steel. This frame is there for the purposes of providing reinforcement to the wall.
It is incumbent that the shipper provides all the relevant safety information and other information that is pertinent for a safe bulk liquid transport.
Due diligence on prior shipments
The shipper is responsible for ensuring that the carrier does not transport their cargo in a container that previously carried another liquid and will lead to cross-contamination. So it is their responsibility to specify that the shipping container must be cleaned thoroughly between shipments.
This is the party that does the actual bulk liquid transport and they have the following roles
The ISO Container Maintenance of Transportation Equipment
The equipment doing the actual bulk liquid transport should be functional and safe. They should undergo inspection checks as per the corresponding laws.
The carrier is responsible for ensuring all registrations and licenses related to their vehicle.
and its service are up-to-date.
The ISO Container Punctuality and safe delivery
The whole purpose of bulk liquid transport is that the cargo should arrive safely and on time. Some cargo is very time-sensitive and can lead to a damaged shipment should any delays occur during bulk liquid transport.
Bulk Freight Brokers
This is the party that acts as an intermediary between the shipper and the carrier. They handle the logistics of bringing these two parties together and because they have the experience, they are in a better position to recommend the equipment to be used. They ensure that both parties’ needs are met, particularly, verification of contact information, safe arrival of the shipment, and the payment modalities.
The company carrying out the bulk liquid transportation should have very high safety standards that they require from their staff. They should also be in a position to review the safety standards with the shipper because this is important for the cargo to arrive safely.
The shipper will want to work with a bulk liquid transport company that has done previous business with other clients and has good recommendations from them. If they’re working with them for the first time they can check their accreditation with the Better Business Bureau or simply get a recommendation to work with them.
The shipper needs to be able to rely on the bulk liquid transportation company. There are a lot of federal and state regulations when it comes to transportation of liquids meant for human consumption. There are products that will go bad if there are any delays during the transportation process. A key factor when it comes dependability is how experienced the company is in bulk liquid transport.
The consignment needs to be covered in case of any contingencies that occur during transportation or even during loading and unloading. So should the shipment be lost due to delays or an accident then the shipper will be compensated for their loss.
And finally, bulk liquid transport can be an expensive affair, particularly, if it is done regularly, so it is important for the shipper to engage the services of a transportation company that has a transparent costing system and is open to negotiate based on the volumes being transported and the distance of travel.
